10 Times Insecure’s Issa Rae Slayed The Natural Hair Game

I’m a long time fan of Issa Rae and her work. I’ve watched and re-watched episodes of  The Mis-Adventures of an Awkward Black Girl countless times. I was so happy when Issa Rae’s show, Insecure was picked up by HBO. It’s been a joy to watch her journey from Youtube to a major network. The epitome of Black Girl Magic.

This week the first season of Insecure concluded with the finale episode appropriately named, Broken as F*ck. My feeling are still hurt. We must discuss below in the comments section.

One thing that I have loved is Issa Rae continues to show the versatility of natural hair on the show as well as in all her press.

She rocks her TWA (teeny weeny afro), proudly but isn’t afraid to switch it up with cornrows, extensions and/or twisted updos. The hairstylist behind these looks is no other than celebrity natural hairstylist, Felicia Leatherwood.  Her other clients include Jill Scott, Simone Missick, Teyonah Parris (whom we’ve featured countless times), and Ava Duvernay, just to name a few.

Insecure, Issa Rae, and Felicia Leatherwood are doing a lot to normalize natural hair in a big way! So unbothered by shrinkage of the TWA. Playing with the versatility of natural hair instead of covering it up. So many twists, braids and shapes. Letting black women know that they don’t have to feel limited, you still have a lot of style options regardless of your hair type, texture, or length!!!

Felicia Leatherwood is also know for her Detangler Brush that is feature in our Holiday Gift Guide.

what natural hair products like creams or butters to use for extremely frizzy and extremely dry hair for natural coily kinky 4C hair and itchy scalp too.

Hi Tamera, I recently subscribed to
your Newsletter and took a Tour through
Your Hair Journey. Thank You So Much
for sharing. I really appreciate how you
have researched and used several methods, products, etc. so that you could
help others learn how to take care of Natural Hair.

My area of expertise is actually getting the
Hair To Grow. Once you achieve this, it’s
really something trying to take care of it,
especially 4c hair, and I have several
textures that makes it even more of a
challenge to maintain and to retain the
    longer the Hair gets.
