The summer can do some damage to your natural hair. The heat, sun’s rays, humidity and chlorine are just a few things that can dry and potential cause breakage, even if you practiced our 10 Tips For Healthy Hair This Summer.

Depending on your geographical location the fall and winter will be worse.  This is the time to rehab your natural hair to eliminate and prevent further damage.

Here are 5 things you can do to repair your hair after a long, hot summer.

Get A Trim

I know clipping your ends seems a little counterproductive. But believe me, its necessary. Managing split ends is the best way to retain length.  Your ends are the oldest part of your natural hair. Over time the ends of your hair become worn, split, and damaged. If left unclip, this damage will progress up the hair shaft. The only way to eliminate bad ends is to trim them.  Do it now or you may have to cut more hair than you want later down the line.

Deep Condition Regularly

Clarify and Chelate

Product build-up and hard water minerals will weigh your hair down and keep it from absorbing nutrients.  If your hair is hard, frizzy, feels tacky, or just does not seem to absorb water or products, you need a clarifying treatment.  An

An Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse or using a shampoo that’s formulated to clarify and chelate like Ouidad Superfruit Renewal Clarifying Shampoo is a great solution.

Do a Protein Treatment

Protein treatments repair hair by replenishing its building block or protein structure; leaving you with stronger and healthier hair. (Read more about the benefits of proteins for natural hair.)

Protein treatment can be done as need or quarterly to maintain the strength of your hair.

I use African’s Best Hair Mayonnaise which is a light protein treatment bi-weekly and for more intense protein treatments, ApHogee 2-Step Protein Treatment and Balanced Moisturizer is one of the best. This one can leave your hair very hard so you may want to follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner.
