Coconut Water for Natural Hair

Coconut Water Face TonerI wanted to know if I could use coconut water in my natural hair. I saw a Coconut Water Face Toner, which caused me to do a little digging.

2009 study in Molecules looks into the specific ingredients that make coconut water beneficial when ingested and applied topically.

Some of my readers from the Caribbean shared that they rinsed their hair with coconut water and it can be very hydrating and nourishing to both hair and skin.

In addition to its hydrating properties, coconut water has a wealth of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and more.  These chemical properties give coconut water its anti-aging and antioxidant properties. You can learn more about all of these benefits in this 2009 issue of Molecules.

Like coconut oil, coconut water is known as an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial ingredient that prevents dandruff in the scalp, infections, and itchiness.
How To Use Coconut Water For Your Hair

I used coconut water to make a simple Coconut Water Moisturizing Leave-in Spray.  The same spray works great as a daily moisturizing spray. You’ll need three ingredients: coconut water, aloe vera juice and jojoba oil.

Before I share the recipe for my DIY Coconut Water Moisturizing Leave-In Spray, here are some important things you should know.

Read the label.  Depending on the brand of coconut water there may or may not be additional ingredients such as flavors, sugar, and preservatives. Choose pure coconut water. Preservatives are fine, if you’re okay with that.

Make a small amount. I make enough that last for about 3-4 days to ensure it doesn’t become rancid.  Make sure you keep it refrigerated. Again, there is a chance the DIY spray can go bad. Keep it refrigerated to make sure this doesn’t happen.

You know what? I completely forgot that coconut oil is anti-bacterial…which means I could probably try it for my dry scalp issues just like the article said.

It’ll be crazy if (after two years of searching) the answer to my itchy scalp problems have been tucked away in my cabinet this whole time.

My wife and I have started cooking with coconut oil, and I’ve been amazed to learn so much about what can be done with the fruit. Coconut water as a hair and face toner sounds like a great idea.
