DIY Poetic Justice Box Braids

How To Do Box Braids
In this video Yolanda Renee walks you through the basics of how to do box braids. Her technique is a little different from others. Instead of installing the braiding extension hair on loose natural hair, she plaits the her loose hair into a two-strand twist and then begins the braiding process.  This techniques ensures that there’s a better visual blending of the textures. See for yourself below.

Looks good however, the only issue I have is when the time comes to remove the braid there may be a lot of breakage. It’s easier to seperate/slide shed hair and product (matted at the root) when hair has not been twisted.

    Hi Tamara,

Thanks for responding. I never wear my hair beyond the time you mentioned. If I did, it would be ‘afrocide’ for my 4c hair, which is currently nearly waist length when straightened and just past my shoulders in it’s natural form.

I’m in the process of taking out my box braids right now. They have been in for about 4.5 weeks. I always seem to have a bit of matted product when I remove my braids. This might be because I apply natural oils (at the roots) on a weekly basis, and leave in ‘spray’ conditioner, between each one. I’m not sure if it’s just my hair, but I would need to remove my braids after 2 weeks in order to ensure there is no product at all. I would not find this feasible.

Does anyone else have this issue? If so, whats the best way of keeping hair nourished, whilst preventing matting.

What you’re describing is not unheard of with natural hair. You may want to try a water-based daily moisturizer or conditioner instead of the spray. You may see a little more frizz but if will keep your hair soft and moisturizer which will stop any matting and excess shedding.

Wow Tony, that’s a bit harsh! All these girls look fantastic…

However, I guess it’s a matter of personal taste.

Do you have any suggestions. . Are the rumors true?
