Sheamoisture Color System 4

I am over the moon excited as I write this post. So, I tried the Shea Moisture Ammonia-Free Hair Color System in the shade ‘Bright Auburn’ over the weekend. Ok, I have never in my entire life colored my hair, so you can only imagine how scared I was. However, I put my big girl panties on and embraced the red. And I love it!

First I must say that the packaging is fun to look at. The artwork is divine! All the boxes (no matter the shade) are intriguing in design. When you open the box the contents are nicely packaged in a pretty little bag inside. Emphasis was indeed placed on packaging – I must say. This system is moisture-rich, 100% Ammonia free and sulfate free. What’s not to love?

How I Used This Product

The information booklet inside the box was very clear and descriptive. You could use the brush method if you know what you’re doing or if you’re like me who knows jack about coloring – then you use the bottle method. This was pretty easy. The color was in a tube and there was a developer bottle and you are supposed to mix the two together in the bottle, shake and apply. In no time my hair looked ‘fire red’. I was actually scared it would look that red.

Contents of the box!

After 30 mins I rinsed the color out until the water was clear. I have read and watched enough videos to know that after coloring your hair, it will feel stripped. But this didn’t happen AT ALL! The Shea Moisture color system is 100% Ammonia-free so that is why my hair wasn’t stripped. My hair took the color really well. My hair wasn’t too red but it did scream ‘Look At Me!’ I loved it so far.

I then shampooed with the Raw Shea Moisture Retention Shampoo that came in the box. Honestly, I love this shampoo and the bottle had a lot in it. I will certainly get at least 2 more washes out of what is left. It lathers so well and my hair felt soft and not stripped at all.

I conditioned with the Raw Shea Restorative Conditioner. I loved the conditioner but it was so hard to get it out of that bottle. Shea Moisture need to do something about that bottle situation. It’s not really squeezable and the conditioner is thick. Now, as it relates to the conditioner itself; I AM SOLD! I love the slip. I love how my hair sucks it up. I love how soft it left my hair. I LOVE! I LOVE! I LOVE! I LOVE! Ok that’s enough Shelly. LOL! I will be buying a full size of this conditioner (and thank God the full size has a pump).

I towel dried my hair and added some of the Raw Shea Reconstructive Finishing Elixir that came in the box. Then I applied my Curl and Style Milk and twist my hair and add some rods on the ends and that was the end of my process. I did notice it was bleeding. After twisting, my hands looked like it was in dye. I am not sure if I didn’t do something right or what. However, I read online and asked around and see that bleeding is common after coloring. My question is: When will it stop? Advice needed so feedback encouraged.

  •  Ammonia-Free so it is not as harsh on your hair as regular box color systems
  •  Sulfate-Free
  •  Easy to apply yourself (save your salon money)
  • Decent sized shampoo, conditioners and elixir. (you can get another use out of it)
  • Left my hair feeling soft and moisture

  • Conditioner bottle is not squeezable so its hard to get the product out. (Work on that Shea Moisture!)

Final Thoughts

Overall I love the Shea Moisture Ammonia-Free Hair Color System. I have never colored before and was scared out of my wits. But I see now that I had nothing to worry about. I love the color I got and love how my hair feels and look. The instructions in the box were step by step and very helpful for people like me who knows nothing about coloring. I am not enjoying the bleeding too much but I read that is normal at first.

Used it this past weekend. I used the dark auburn, but it seems more like deep burgundy. Not the color I wanted, but I can deal with it for now. The color bleeds some. Easy process. Will use again.

  2. Necey

I would LOVE to try this color system, but I already started using henna for my hair. Had I not, I’d be allll over this. I’ve seen nothing but good results from other users (thanks!), and Shea Moisture is my favorite natural hair care brand!

  3. Regi

Yes, the same color as you and I love it also. Its actually time for a retouch. It had been a couple of years since I colored. I’m trying to give this “natural” look a year long try before I return to the heat process.

I used this product 2 weeks ago in jet black mainly to cover my grey around the perimeter. I was oh so pleasantly shocked. This was my first time applying color to my hair and the no drip , no mess application was so easy. My hair didnt feel stripped.
Too much time getting conditioner out of bottle though!!!!! C’mon Shea
My hair still feels great although the grey is peeking through. Other than that, I loved the results and will concentrate on my greying temples a little more.

I used this product a couple of times but unfortunately the color does not last. I used Jet Black and concentrated around the perimeter because that is where I gray mostly. I am glad that I edged with grease because it did get on my ear and on my neck and I consider myself a pretty good hairstylist. It does not cover the gray past three-four weeks at max and it does cost quite a bit ($14.95) at Target. It is packaged nicely and my hair did feel great.

I use this system to cover my grey. Medium brown looks black at first, but then will fade somewhat to a dark brown. I love this system and don’t trust using any other. After I color, my hair is soft and I get so many compliments about how rich the color looks. I was a “coloring virgin” before using his system and have been very pleased with the results. As my hair gets longer, I am finding I need two boxes!

I tried the bright auburn on my loc’s and loveee love loveee the results. You have to wash your hair alot to get the color to stop bleeding out.

I was looking for a permanant color a couple of years ago and started using Naturtint purchased from Whole Foods. I have not seen this in stores in my area but I saw right away it contains sodium hydroxide which is lye. That would defeat my purpose of going natural.

    1. Tamara Post author

Yes, it is true that sodium hydroxide is lye. But lye is also used as a pH balancer. I’m sure that its won’t relax your hair.

  9. Martae

Will the hair coloring damage your hair since it contains Hydrogen Peroxide. I really want to try this product.

To the author and others who have used this,Do you have any update comments about the damage or changes in texture, if any?

I have dyed my hair jet black months ago, but it’s been a few months. Will the medium golden blonde take on my hair, or should I bleach my hair?

  12. cari

Hi your blog is awesome, so much info, thankyou!! So I’ve recently coloured my hair, I’m a stylist and want to offer natural alternatives to clients. Was there a change with hair texture or porosity to your hair after colouring?

  13. mylife26

I used the SheaMoisture Ammonia-Free Hair Color System; I dyed my hair Jet Black. I have been Red, Blond, dark brown I bleached my hair to get high lights and had to cut 10inches of hair off. So for almost 2 years I have been rocking my natural color Dirty Brown. I grew tired of my natural hair color because it matches my skin to the T. So I was scared to dye my hair again but I read and heard rave reviews about this line. So I did and let me just say I’m so in LOVE!!! I love my Jet black curls, my hair is already thick but my hair looks thicker and my curls are POPPING!! The only draw back is since dying my hair my scalp is very itchy so I will be doing a AVC rinse tonight beside that I will be black for awhile.

The instructions were easy, this was the first time I dyed my hair myself and it was easy!! Will repurchase in about 2-3 months for a touch up

The best, my hair is real damaged and this works like a miracle. My hair looks and feels healthier and the color is fierce!

Hello Tam, in your previous POST:-4 Things You Should Know Before Coloring Your Natural Hair” you made this comment: Be aware of ammonia substitutes used such as the more popular ethanolamine, also known as monoethanolamine or MEA. These are equally, if not more, damaging to the hair. But because it isn’t “Ammonia” the company can advertise as “Ammonia free” (doesn’t necessarily mean safer), misleading many.

“Ethanolamine” is of the Radiant Color Creme ingredient in this POST: “Shea moisture Ammonia free hair color” you’re excited about. Question is why Do you consider this product safe for natural hair after your previous post on chemical damages?

  16. Lisa

Please can you not list every colour that Shea moisture do when you’re not reviewing that actual colour.. It makes it really hard to find reviews on one specific colour, through search engine, and is annoying to wade through this sea of reviews that list all colours
